Course Description
Examines assessment and management of trauma emergencies as outlined by the National Emergency Medical Service Education Standards (NEMSES) within the Advanced EMT curriculum. Provides students with specific skills related to airway, resuscitation and shock management.
Laboratory 2 hours. Total 2 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to teach the Advanced EMT student the principle skills of airway management, resuscitation techniques and care of a patient in shock.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisite: Current Virginia EMT and CPR certification as approved by the Virginia Office of EMS. Co-requisite: EMS 181: Advanced Airway and Shock Management
Course Objectives
- Techniques of assuring a patent airway
- Assessment and management of adequate and inadequate respiration
- Supplemental oxygen therapy
- Assessment and management of adequate and inadequate ventilation
- Treatment of shock, hypoperfusion and dehydration
- The use Circulatory assist devices
- Peri-arrest, Post resuscitation support, and Termination of resuscitation techniques.
