Course Description
Introduces students to the basic anatomy of the human face, and the methods, materials and techniques used to alter the appearance of themselves and others through the use of the fundamentals of stage makeup and prosthetics used to create different characters and looks for different styles and types of theatrical productions.
Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
CST 149 introduces students to the basic concepts, materials and techniques involved in makeup applications for the stage.
Course Objectives
- Communication
- Effectively communicate performative observations through written and/or oral communication.

- Identify and explain how various technical elements of makeup design contribute to personal perception.
- Deconstruct makeup designs to understand their components and how to execute similar designs.
- Cultural and Social Understanding
- Recognize/describe how makeup influences individuals and/or society and how different individuals and societies might have different means of expression through makeup.
- Recognize/describe how gender as a social construct effects makeup in western/euro-centric societies.
- Recognize/describe how euro-centric values affect the understanding of beauty and how makeup should be used.

- Demonstrate the development of receptivity to makeup designs.
- Cultivate personal goals related to learning how to apply makeup.
- Makeup Application
- Illustrate basic facial anatomy.
- Model how to alter the face with highlight and shadow.
- Model how to alter the face with basic prosthetics.
- Identify and use all tools provided in a typical theatrical makeup kit.
- Model how to blend and apply a variety of colors.
- Model how to apply different texture techniques, including crosshatch, wrinkles, fur, and feathering.
- Makeup Design and Analysis
- Analyze how to create different makeup looks.
- Create a makeup croquis based on various design assignments.
- Maintain a makeup morgue (in digital or paper format) to examine all makeup designs and applications for future reference.
- Summarize the differences between makeup for theatre and film.
- Makeup Techniques
- Demonstrate proficiency in creating a variety of makeup applications such as Old Age, Zombie, Fantasy, Character, Gender Swap, Animals, Slim and Stout, Injury, Highlight and Shadow, Historical Era, etc.
