Course Description

The course outline below was developed as part of a statewide standardization process.

General Course Purpose

This course continues to develop language proficiency in the three modes of communication: interpretive, presentational and interpersonal in both formal and informal settings and with more complex sentence structures. The goal of the course is to practice idiomatic expressions and formal and informal styles of communication, negotiate meaning with native speakers and increase oral proficiency.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: SPA 211 or assessment by instructor.

Course Objectives

• Linguistic Proficiency
• Continue to strengthen their command of the target language, focusing on improving speaking and listening skills.
• Demonstrate comprehension of authentic materials, including literary and non-fiction texts and films.
• Cultural Awareness
• Continue to develop and demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the cultural diversity of countries where the target language is spoken.
• Explore customs, traditions, history, and contemporary issues from various communities where the target language is spoken.
• Identify and make connections with the cultures of the target language and their own
• Critical Thinking
• Apply critical thinking skills to solve problems and make sense of complex issues.
• Analyze topics and offer information and/or solutions.
• Professional Readiness
• Demonstrate confidence in their communicative skills and speak effectively in both formal and informal settings.
• Differentiate appropriate language and registers in academic, professional, and social contexts.
• Collaborate with others and continue to use the target language and cultural behaviors to communicate appropriately in personal and professional settings at an intermediate level.
