GOL 135 (H06) Geology of Nelson County, VA. One-day field trip Saturday, June 14, 2025, 8am-8pm. Rain date: Sunday, June 15, 2025. Important pre-trip logistical information and preparatory videos & readings will be shared online via Canvas. This field trip will examine the exemplary geology of Nelson County, including Blue Ridge basement complex granites, mylonites of the Rockfish Valley Fault Zone, nelsonite (the state rock!), lava flows of the Catoctin Formation, and debris flows associated with Hurricane Camille (1969). Students will be evaluated with a field trip report which will be completed after the trip itself. NOTE: This trip involves moderately strenuous hiking on forest trails. Meet in Lot 2 (next on the traffic circle) on the PVCC main campus at 8:00 a.m.; Return by 7:00 p.m. Transport will be in PVCC van + student carpools, organized on site.
